So, you've had a Swedish Massage, asked for Deep Tissue when you really needed it. But, what else is there? Soma Spa has specialized in Ayurvedic spa services since 2002 and offers some deeply restorative treatments from this tradition. Here's what you need to know about Ayurvedic massage and what to expect at your first session.

Ayurveda Basics

Ayurveda is a holistic healing system and is the longest continuously practiced natural medicine. The philosophy, which originated in India between 3500-5000 years ago (even older than Traditional Chinese Medicine) focuses on the belief that the mind, body and spirit all come together to create the complete picture of a person's overall health and well-being. Rather than treating specific symptoms like Western medicine does, Ayurveda seeks to identify the underlying root causes of the symptoms an individual is experiencing to eliminate the true problem through lifestyle and nutrition.

What to Expect During an Ayurvedic Massage

Ayurvedic daily massage is strongly suggested to help people improve their health. You’re encouraged to do this at home, but we’d love to introduce you to this ritual at Soma Spa! An Ayurvedic massage therapist will tailor the massage specifically to your needs, starting with your dosha, or constitution. Everyone has a unique balance, and Ayurveda seeks to optimize your treatment based on your specific dosha.

In Ayurveda, oil is medicine. We change our oil and technique based on the season and our client’s dosha or constitution. Your therapist will assess your dosha and adjust accordingly and you’ll be warm heartedly walked through our spa protocol and what to except during your session. These services were originally (and still are in India) used during cleansing programs to heal disease. At Soma Spa, we design these services to be deeply balancing and relaxing to the body and mind.

The goal of Ayurvedic massage is to boost circulation and improve lymphatic drainage to help flush toxins out of your system. It also focuses on clearing and balancing the energy centers in your body, called chakras. Clearing these both of these pathways can offer a host of benefits, including boosting your immune system, improving sleep, brightening skin, and encouraging weight loss.

At Soma Spa, we offer a variety of Ayurvedic massages ranging from 30 to 90 minutes per session. In addition to using different Ayurvedic massage techniques, treatments also include the use of oils and healing herbs to target specific ailments or areas of the body and mind. Many of our massages also include steam treatments, helping your body to release toxins and purifying your system.

Learn More About Ayurveda

In addition to Ayurvedic massages, we also offer thorough Ayurvedic consultations. If you are interested in learning more about Ayurveda, your dosha and holistic healing, this is the service for you. Over the course of 90 minutes, you and your Ayurvedic Consultant will review your holistic history to paint a picture of your health and well-being in order to develop a treatment and care strategy. We highly recommend signing up for a consultation to delve deeper into Ayurveda and its myriad potential benefits for your life.
